Delta Security Nabs Edo Police Officer Over Alleged Illegal Revenue Collaboration

……..with 3 Others over Illegal Revenue Collections

Iselle-Uku, Operation Delta Sweep have intercepted a police officer attached to Zone 5 Headquarters in Benin City, Edo State, over alleged collaboration with illegal revenue collectors operating along the Asaba–Benin Expressway in Delta State.

The arrest occurred in the Issele-Uku axis of the highway during a routine patrol by the security outfit. Authorities said the officer and several accomplices were allegedly part of a group mounting illegal roadblocks to extort money from unsuspecting motorists.
According to preliminary findings, the group was reportedly led by a man identified simply as Emma, who is currently at large.

Investigators believe the suspect coordinated the activities of the illegal collectors who operated along the busy expressway at night.
Operation Delta Sweep disclosed that the syndicate allegedly mounted roadblocks between 6 p.m. to 4 a.m., demanding payments ranging from ₦5,000 to ₦15,000 from motorists under the guise of security checks.

Upon sighting the approaching Operation Delta Sweep team, three police officers reportedly fled into the nearby bush in an attempt to evade arrest. However, one officer was apprehended alongside three young men believed to be members of the illegal operation.
The suspects were identified as Burema Midingawa, 19, from Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, described as a factory worker; Victor Joseph, 28, from Gombe Local Government Area of Adamawa State, said to be a poultry guard; and Ifeanyi Obinor, 35, an ICT engineer from Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State.

All four suspects were subsequently taken to Asaba for further interrogation by security authorities as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged illegal activities along the expressway.
Security officials noted that the incident has further exposed the presence of “bad eggs” within the security architecture, warning that such individuals undermine efforts by the Delta State Government to combat insecurity and maintain order across the state.

Ughelli Leaders Lament Marginalisation, Launch Movement to Reclaim Political Relevance

Leaders of Ughelli Kingdom in Delta State have decried what they described as the continued marginalisation of their people in political appointments at both state and federal levels.

The President General (PG)  of the Ughelli Descendants Union, (UDU) Chief Samuel Akpimegi (JP), made the assertion during the unveiling of the Ughelli Kingdom Formidable Movement, a platform aimed at repositioning the kingdom politically and developmentally.

Akpimegi said Ughelli sons and daughters have not held any significant appointments at the state or federal levels for a long time, stressing that the situation has left the kingdom largely absent in the scheme of political affairs.

According to him, the lack of representation in major political positions, including the State House of Assembly and the Senate, has become a major concern for the people of Ughelli Kingdom.
He stated that the perceived neglect informed the decision to establish the Ughelli Kingdom Formidable Movement as a strategy to mobilise and unite the people toward reclaiming their rightful place in governance.

The UDU President General added that the traditional institution and leaders across the kingdom have thrown their support behind the initiative, noting that the movement enjoys the backing of the monarch and key stakeholders in the area.

Akpimegi called on all Ughelli sons and daughters to put aside political differences and unite for the collective interest of the kingdom, regardless of their affiliations with political parties such as APC, PDP, ADC and Labour Party.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the occasion, Dr Bishop Kingsley Enakerhere, said he accepted to lead the unveiling of the movement because of its focus on promoting unity and community development, while the Special Guest of Honour, Chief Lawrence Emerayo, described the initiative as a platform designed to unite Ughelli communities and strengthen their collective voice for progress.

Activist Tackles Delta Deputy Speaker Over ‘Okada Empowerment,’ Alleges Double Standards

By truthsayer

A social commentator, Efe Ekure, has criticised the Deputy Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Arthur Akpowowo, over the distribution of motorcycles and sewing machines to constituents under what was described as a mega empowerment programme.

Ekure, in an open letter made public on Monday, accused the lawmaker of double standards, recalling that Akpowowo had in 2018 strongly condemned a similar empowerment programme organised by the then member representing Ethiope East Constituency, Evance Ivwurie.

According to him, the programme at the time, tagged the “Mother of All Empowerments,” involved the distribution of motorcycles, sewing machines and grinding machines to constituents, which Akpowowo allegedly criticised as unsustainable.

Ekure said he and several others supported the criticism then, noting that he had never been a supporter of what he described as “Okada empowerment,” insisting that empowerment initiatives should focus on sustainable economic opportunities capable of transforming livelihoods.

The activist, however, expressed surprise that years later, the Deputy Speaker had allegedly adopted the same approach by distributing motorcycles and sewing machines to constituents, questioning whether such initiatives represented meaningful development.

He argued that while Ivwurie carried out the earlier programme as a floor member of the House, Akpowowo currently occupies the position of Deputy Speaker in an oil-producing state and should be able to facilitate more impactful empowerment initiatives.

Ekure urged the lawmaker to reflect on his actions and focus on programmes capable of creating long-term economic value, adding that public office holders should always be mindful that their actions would ultimately be judged by the people and by history.

Residents Decry High Fuel Price, Power Outage in Asaba

Truthsayer

Residents of Asaba have continued to express frustration over the rising cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and the persistent electricity blackout affecting many communities in the state capital.

Our correspondent gathered that PMS was being sold for as high as ₦1,330 per litre at Dumem Filling Station, located around  Bush Market area shortly after Mariam Babangida Junction. Motorists and commuters who spoke to our correspondent described the development as an indication of the worsening economic hardship being experienced by citizens.

Some residents also lamented that despite the high cost of fuel, electricity supply in many parts of the city remained unstable. They said the situation had forced households and small businesses to rely heavily on generators, thereby increasing their daily expenses.

The affected residents blamed the development on what they described as poor governance and ineffective policies by the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC,  noting that the rising cost of living had continued to erode the purchasing power of ordinary Nigerians.

They also criticised what they called the attitude of political supporters who continue to praise government performance despite the challenges faced by citizens in meeting basic needs such as fuel and electricity.

The residents therefore called on relevant authorities and stakeholders, including the Benin Electricity Distribution Company,(BEDC) to urgently address the lingering power outages and economic challenges affecting the people.

They stressed that tangible improvements in the cost of living and public services would go a long way in restoring public confidence.

The Unfair Targeting of Hon. Festus UtuamaWhen Facts Are Ignored

Truthsayer

Recent accusations circulating in the public space against Festus Utuama, the Honourable member representing the people of Ughelli South Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, over the alleged abandonment of the Owhahwa Road project have raised serious concerns about misinformation and the need for proper understanding of legislative responsibilities.

It is important to state clearly that the road project in question was originally awarded to the late Kenneth Gbagi and was later reportedly re awarded to Emuobo Gbagi. Therefore, attempts to drag the name of Hon. Festus Utuama into the controversy appear to be driven more by sentiment than by verified facts. Such claims, if left unchecked, risk misleading the public and unfairly tarnishing the reputation of individuals who may have little or no direct involvement in the execution of the project.

Observers note that Hon. Utuama is widely known for his calm and quiet disposition in public service. However, this reserved nature should not be mistaken for weakness or an excuse for unwarranted attacks on social media. Public discourse, particularly on issues of governance and development, must be guided by facts rather than emotion or political bias.

For the sake of clarity, the primary responsibility of a member of the Delta State House of Assembly is legislative in nature. Lawmakers are elected to make laws, represent the interests of their constituents, and provide oversight on the activities of the executive arm of government. They debate policies, sponsor bills, and ensure that government actions align with the laws and budgetary provisions approved by the legislature.

While legislators may sometimes facilitate constituency projects as part of government intervention programmes, the actual construction and execution of projects such as roads remain the responsibility of the executive arm of government and the relevant ministries or contractors.

Consequently, holding a legislator solely responsible for the execution or abandonment of such projects without proper verification reflects a misunderstanding of the structure of governance.

As concerned stakeholders and indigenes of Ughelli South, it is therefore necessary to encourage responsible public engagement. Citizens, commentators, and political actors must ensure that information presented to the public is accurate and well verified before being circulated in the media.

Constructive criticism remains vital in a democratic society, but it must be grounded in truth.
Ultimately, the people of Ughelli South deserve honest conversations about development and governance. Spreading unverified allegations only distracts from the collective goal of ensuring progress and accountability in the constituency.
