Tragedy in Agadama, Delta community as Herdsmen kill woman, husband escapes death

By Elvis Oyomah

Tragedy strucked recently as the youth leader of Agadama community, Ughelli North local government of Delta state, Mr. Francis Okparume, escaped death on the 8th of January, 2018, two days after the state’s local government election following attack on the community which led to the killing of his wife, Mrs. Flourence Oghenejite by Fulani herdsmen.

It was reliably gathered that the Agadama community had been under siege of Fulani herdsmen that has been persistently attacking, intimidating and raping their wives and daughters that had gone for farming since that was their major occupation.

A community leader who spoke to newsmen on ground of anonymity said the youth leader, Mr. Francis Okparume would have equally been killed by the Fulani herdsmen as they did to his wife, Mrs. Flourence Oghenejite Okparume, when they launched attack on the community if he had not escaped through the help of his brother, Mr. George Okparume.

The source while narrating the ordeal said, “The whole trouble started on the 8th of January, 2018, two days after the Delta state local government election, the Fulani Herdsmen came into our community in an odd hour of the night attacking our people because we ask them to vacate our farm land.

“Before this attack on our community, Fulani Herdsmen have been destroying our crops in the bush, intimidating and raping our women, when they know too well that famine is the only occupation among us since we have no other business apart from this farming.

“So on this fateful day, the youth leader of Agadama, Mr. Francis Okparume who was left with no option, summoned a meeting with the elders to meet in the king’s palace and to inform him of the effect of the Fulani Herdsmen in the community, and to inform him that it is high time they relocate the Herdsmen from the community.

“The essence of the meeting was to see that peace reign in the community since the Herdsmen are continuously raining havoc on our community, destroying our farm produce, intimidating our people and even raping our wives to the point of death.

“On a fateful day the youth leader led his boys into the bush to ask the herdsmen to leave the community, but they replied that the king has leased the bush to them for 20 years, but the youths insisted they must leave and that was the beginning of the crises between the youth lesder, Mr. Francis Akporume and the fulani herdsmen.

“When the king saw how serious the issue was, he demanded for battalions of soldiers to the community and that was what led to the killing of Mr. Francis Okparume’s wife, while he was badly injured until his younger brother, Mr. George Okparume escaped him from the community and a state of a emergency was declared in the community, while the youth leader, Mr. Francis Okparume declared wanted.”

When contacted on cell phone after few days of the incident, Mr. Francis Okparume, said the story is everywhere and his life is not safe, so he cannot talk to anybody, that mostly the death of his wife killed in cold blood by the Fulani herdsmen still remains a shock and still affecting him, and that presently he does not know where his five children are, except the rumour that the children are with his aged mother of 72 years is true.
