Asaba – As Nigeria marks this year’s Workers’ Day, Chief Barr. Fred Okiemute Majemite has called for a stronger and more sustainable structural architecture that will improve the welfare, efficiency, and dignity of civil servants across the country. He stressed that the nation’s workforce remains the engine room of governance and national productivity, deserving of deliberate reforms that place their interests at the heart of public administration.
Majemite, a two time distinguished Honourable Commissioner, reflected on the era when commissioners in Delta State were widely regarded as distinguished leaders, carrying their offices with deep respect, responsibility, and institutional value. According to him, leadership positions were once symbols of service and accountability, unlike what he described as the present decline in standards where some offices have been reduced in stature and influence.
Speaking on the significance of Workers’ Day, the legal luminary urged leaders at all levels to use the occasion as a moment of reflection on the sacrifices, resilience, and hard work of Nigerian civil servants. He noted that public servants remain central to the machinery of government and national development, often working under difficult conditions while maintaining commitment to service delivery.
He commended the leadership of both federal and state governments for efforts toward inclusivity in governance, acknowledging that policies aimed at broader participation and worker engagement remain essential for national cohesion. He, however, emphasized that inclusivity must go beyond rhetoric and translate into practical reforms that strengthen institutional capacity and improve working conditions.
Majemite also used the opportunity to appreciate Nigerian workers for their unwavering support, steadfastness, and productivity despite economic and social challenges. He described them as the backbone of the nation, whose daily contributions sustain government institutions and drive progress in every sector of society.
While concluding by calling for renewed commitment to building a system that rewards merit, professionalism, and dedication within the civil service. According to him, a stronger workforce supported by sound structural reforms will not only enhance governance but also secure a more prosperous future for Nigeria.
