Asaba – As Nigeria marks this year’s Workers’ Day, Chief Barr. Fred Okiemute Majemite has called for a stronger and more sustainable structural architecture that will improve the welfare, efficiency, and dignity of civil servants across the country. He stressed that the nation’s workforce remains the engine room of governance and national productivity, deserving of deliberate reforms that place their interests at the heart of public administration.
Majemite, a two time distinguished Honourable Commissioner, reflected on the era when commissioners in Delta State were widely regarded as distinguished leaders, carrying their offices with deep respect, responsibility, and institutional value. According to him, leadership positions were once symbols of service and accountability, unlike what he described as the present decline in standards where some offices have been reduced in stature and influence.
Speaking on the significance of Workers’ Day, the legal luminary urged leaders at all levels to use the occasion as a moment of reflection on the sacrifices, resilience, and hard work of Nigerian civil servants. He noted that public servants remain central to the machinery of government and national development, often working under difficult conditions while maintaining commitment to service delivery.
He commended the leadership of both federal and state governments for efforts toward inclusivity in governance, acknowledging that policies aimed at broader participation and worker engagement remain essential for national cohesion. He, however, emphasized that inclusivity must go beyond rhetoric and translate into practical reforms that strengthen institutional capacity and improve working conditions.
Majemite also used the opportunity to appreciate Nigerian workers for their unwavering support, steadfastness, and productivity despite economic and social challenges. He described them as the backbone of the nation, whose daily contributions sustain government institutions and drive progress in every sector of society.
While concluding by calling for renewed commitment to building a system that rewards merit, professionalism, and dedication within the civil service. According to him, a stronger workforce supported by sound structural reforms will not only enhance governance but also secure a more prosperous future for Nigeria.

……… Mrakpor Congratulates PDP Faithfuls, Says Delta United Under Abduraman
By Akpovoke Otiti
ABUJA – The Supreme Court of Nigeria has nullified the Ibadan convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, declaring the exercise illegal and contrary to the party’s constitutional provisions.
The judgment is seen as a major setback for prominent figures including Seyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed, Adamu Maina Waziri, Emma Ogidi, and Sylvester Monye, who were aligned with the convention and its outcomes.
In its ruling, the apex court held that due process was not followed in convening the Ibadan meeting, thereby invalidating all decisions and appointments arising from it, including those linked to the party’s South South leadership structure.
Reacting to the development, Dr. Peter A. Mrakpor SAN, Chairman of PDP in Delta State, congratulated party faithfuls nationwide, describing the verdict as a victory for justice, internal democracy, and the rule of law.
Mrakpor SAN, further stated that Delta State remains united and steadfast under the leadership of Abduraman Mohammed, noting that the judgment has reinforced cohesion among members in the state.

Abuja – The Acting National President of the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, has accused the Delta Central Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Paulinus Akpeki, of running the party in a dictatorial manner and sidelining members in key decisions.
Otiti, in a statement issued on Tuesday, alleged that Akpeki’s leadership style has weakened internal democracy within the party, claiming that major decisions are being taken without adequate consultation with critical stakeholders.
He further accused the chairman of imposing unpopular aspirants on party members, warning that such actions could create disaffection within the ranks and undermine the party’s chances in future elections.
“The APC in Delta Central is gradually losing its democratic values. The voices of members no longer count, as decisions are imposed rather than discussed and agreed upon,” Otiti said.
He called on Akpeki to allow a level playing field for all aspirants, stressing that party members should be given the opportunity to freely choose their preferred candidates.
Otiti also urged party leaders at higher levels to intervene and ensure that the principles of fairness, inclusiveness and transparency are upheld within the Delta Central chapter and beyond.

WARRI – Anger and condemnation have continued to trail the alleged extra judicial killing of 28 year old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, with calls mounting on relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on April 26, 2026, has drawn widespread concern among residents and rights advocates, who described the act as a disturbing abuse of power and a direct assault on the principles of justice and rule of law.
Otiti have urged the Nigeria Police Force, particularly the leadership of the Delta State Police Command, to carry out a transparent and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young man’s death.
They stressed that no law enforcement officer has the right to take the law into personal hands, insisting that every citizen is entitled to due process and fair treatment under the law. Speaking on the development, concerned citizens strongly condemned what they described as deviant conduct, warning that unchecked impunity within security agencies could further erode public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
However, there appears to be some official response, as the Commissioner of Police in Delta State is said to have ordered the arrest of the officer allegedly involved in the fatal shooting. Sources disclosed that the suspect has since been moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for immediate disciplinary measures and possible prosecution.

As reactions continue to pour in, many Nigerians are demanding clear answers regarding the circumstances that led to Mene Ogidi’s death, insisting that justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done.
Former Executive Chairman, Umuneochi Local Government Area, Chief Honourable Ifeanyi Madu has cried foul over the razing of his house, a duplex by fire at Umuobia Housing Estate, in Umuahia, the Abia state capital and calls for thorough investigation to determine the cause of the inferno.
Chief Madu, who resides outside the country said, one of his brothers, Ogochukwu Ihewe Peter informed him that at about 3:00am on April 10, he received an unusual phone call.
“The call was made by my Children’s aunt who lives in Enugu state who announced to my younger brother that my first son’s room had been overtaken by fire.
“My brother made multiple efforts to reach both my Children and their mother but all his efforts failed, and it was so risky for him to leave his house at such ungodly hour.”
Chief Madu disclosed that in the morning, his younger brother rushed to his house that was about five kilometers from where he lives.
“Upon arrival, my brother realized that everything went under the sledge hammer of fierce inferno and no valuable was recovered.
“The nature of the fire raised alot of questions and leaves doubts in the minds of eye witnesses.”
Madu said the source of the fire still remains in doubt considering the fact that the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), had since disconnected the building as to say it was cause by power surge.
“The second question is, how come about the fire to that particular room since its only occupant was away for five days, and the incident happened on the fifth day of his absence.
“If he left a candle light on his departure, it could have died down and not continue burning till the fifth day. Third is that the burnt room was on the 1st floor and not close to the kitchen.”
The distressed man opined that for the fact it took his children’s aunt in Enugu State to alert his brother who lives in Umuahia and who should have been the first point of contact, leaves lots of doubt about the incident.
Madu pointed an accusing finger at someone he didn’t mention his name, who he said had threatened to burn down the house sometime ago, but was stopped.
“Lots of shenanigans surround this incident and leaves everyone mouth agape. The only thing I could remember is that back in 19th/20th Dec. 2020, someone had threatened to burn my house but was stopped by some civil means.”
Chief Madu who said he now lives in fear as the incident threatens the safety of his children and his properties, as he called for an urgent and proper investigations of the source of the fire.
Mrs. Madu, who was at home with her children at the time, on her own account, said the alarm was raised by her house girl.
“ Speaking to newsmen, Mrs. Madu said, the fire incident happened around 3:00 a.m. while they were asleep. She said; ‘ My house girl started shouting that she was choking from smoke and ran to my room, banging and yelling, ‘Mummy, fire!’ I quickly grabbed my 10-year-old daughter and we rushed downstairs,” she recounted. She said the smoke was traced to her son’s room.
“When we forced the door open, thick smoke filled the room and flames were coming from his bed. My son was not at home; he had travelled five days earlier,” she said.
According to her, initial efforts by her children to put out the fire were unsuccessful, prompting her to raise alarm. “Neighbours came out with buckets of water and helped to put out the fire before the Unuahia fire service people arrived,”
She said the cause of the fire remains unknown, noting that there had been no public electricity supply for about two weeks, while the solar system had shut down earlier that night. “No formal complaint has yet been lodged with the police, as at the time of this report, she told newsmen
When contacted, the Chief Fire Officer of Abia State, Mr. Nnanna Arua, confirmed the incident and said the prompt response of firefighters helped prevent the fire from spreading.
“When we received the distress call, we responded promptly and were able to contain the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause,” he told our reporter.
OGHARA – The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP), Otefe-Oghara Branch, has distanced itself from a publication circulating on social media over pension related matters, describing the report as a misrepresentation of the union’s official position.
In a rebuttal issued by the branch leadership, the union stated that the publication attributed statements to its Chairman created an impression of tension between the association and the management of the institution.
According to the union, at no time did the reporter behind the said publication make contact with the Chairman of SSANIP, Otefe-Oghara Branch, on the issues reported.
“The claim suggesting that the Chairman granted any form of interview or discussion is entirely unfounded and should be disregarded,” the union said. SSANIP further pointed to what it described as a glaring error in the report, the incorrect representation of the Chairman’s identity.
“The Chairman’s name is Comrade INANA, E. SAMSON, not ‘Samson Imanaged’ as published. This obvious mistake further exposes the inaccuracy of the report,” the statement added.
The association stressed that since the emergence of the current leadership in December 2025, it has maintained a cordial and constructive working relationship with the management of the Polytechnic.
It noted that there has been no confrontation between SSANIP and the institution’s management, contrary to the impression created in the disputed publication.
Reaffirming its commitment to members’ welfare, the union stated that it remains resolute in protecting and promoting the rights of its members, including issues relating to pensions and other entitlements.
The association explained that it would continue to pursue lawful, strategic, and appropriate avenues of engagement with management in addressing matters affecting staff welfare.
SSANIP therefore urged members of the Polytechnic community and the general public to disregard the circulating report, insisting that it is riddled with misrepresentations and does not reflect the union’s leadership or official stance.
The branch leadership reiterated its dedication to constructive dialogue and responsible advocacy in the collective interest of its members.
